Core aeration

Core Aeration

Lawn aeration should be on your yearly turf maintenance schedule. The process of lawn aeration loosens the soil and allows air, water, and nutrients to enter the growth layer, allowing the roots of your grass to proliferate more easily.  Blessings Lawn provides core aeration for your lawn areas, which means we use a machine to remove “plugs” of turf that are 1½” – 3 “in depth.

As the soil naturally settles to fill the holes over a few weeks’ time, the surrounding soil is allowed to loosen, reducing the overall compaction of the growth layer.

The plugs that are scattered on the lawn break down to form a valuable top dressing that enriches the soil near the surface. This is typically done in the fall, but we do also aerate specific yards in the spring depending on soil type.

Compacted Soil

If you have been properly watering your lawn and your turf is experiencing excessive run-off, most likely the soil is compacted. Compacted soil prevents very important nutrients from reaching the grass root.

Relieving the soil from compaction will instantly give your turf a fighting chance for long-term health. Opening up the earth and making three-inch deep holes will make way for important elements to reach the root zones of the grass.

There are two elements that will increase the life of your lawn, and they just so happen to be ones humans need too. Water and oxygen are the key ingredients to everything that is living on earth. Any deprivation of these elements will be evident when your turf shows signs of stress.

Benefits of aeration include:
    • Reduced soil compaction
    • Improved water penetration
    • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere
    • Improved fertilizer uptake and usage
    • Reduced water runoff and puddling
    • Improved rooting
    • Improved resiliency and cushioning
